When I found out Malibu rum was having a free drink event I was totally there (because I'm a total whore for free alcohol). When I looked back at the flyer I realized that Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy Pete was hosting and thought, "Oh no, this is going to be interesting".

Annnd, I was totally right.

The event turned out to be a wannabe Stoli Hotel with hour long drink lines and bad music.

To top it off, everyone there was dressed, um, pretty bad (to say the least). Even the host himself was wearing one of those Middle Eastern scarves that were popular like three seasons ago!

For some reason I never seem to learn that nothing comes without a price tag (especially free booze).

When I was a young girl growing up in Bridgeport the streets ran rampid with "gang bangers" and "hillbillies" which, at the time, was just the way of life until my (then) best friend's brother was killed just blocks from my home. (That's when my parents decided that we would move it on up...)

Now that I've grown up, I realize that Bridgeport wasn't normal; it was a breeding ground for hatred and racism. I guess that's why it's a little hard for me to grasp how, not more than 12 years later, my sketchy little Irish/Italian neighborhood has become "The community of the Future".

The title is a tongue-in-cheek reference coined by the people over at indie arts and culture rag, Lumpen Magazine, who also house their headquarters/art space, "The Co-Prosperity Sphere", in up-and-coming hood.

Last week, the space hosted Snowball, a fundraiser for Version, their annual spring arts fest. The event had everything you could ever want: live music, 80's karaoke and a wild spaceship ride in the basement (...the ride alone was worth the 7 dollar entry fee).

While I'm sure the lifelong residents aren't really happy about the influx of coffee shops, condos and art kids, I think this is a really positive change for the neighborhood. I hope that other Chicagoans feel the same way or at least make an effort to see what a real "artsy" neighborhood should look like.

I will say that Bridgeport is probably the poor man's Wicker Park (now) but like the kids said, albeit jokingly, it is truly going to be THE community of the future.

It's been two weeks since the new year has begun and I am finally putting up pictures from the party I went to.

(If I believed in resolutions, I would probably resolve to post in a more timely manner but I don't so you're kind of out of luck...)

This year, like most others, I dodged the overpriced party scene and frugally rang in 2008 at People Projects, a local art/music space. I drank cheap champagne til' the wee hours and hung out with great friends, it was awesome.

Here are some pictures from throughout the night...

You may remember the girl on the right for her role as Hitler's other half but I think, from this day forward, she'll be better known for being one of the NYE poncho twins.

All jokes aside, ponchos are the shit!

I have three, none of which are as elaborate as the above, but I wear them to death and I owe the inspiration for my obsession to a girl I spotted at the Eskell opening party with a really cute one on.

I love him for many reasons but the fact that he always coordinates his headband with his outfit is high on the list.

A housecoat with big, black boots makes me feel awkward.

It looks like she's hiding something really sexy under her grandma's nightgown which is a little weird to me.

Take away all the black and I think this would be a really cute dress...for spring (i mean, summer and belted).

Walter Meego, a Chicago "experimental" music duo, had their going away party at the new hipster hotspot, The Burlington in Logan Square.

The duo is comprised of Colin Yarck (who I had a crush on in 10th grade which I think he still believes to be true) and Justin Sconza.

The two have decided to move on from their beautiful city to the land of tiny bitches with feathers in their hair and long-haired dudes in ironic clothes aka L.A to further their music career (I think).

Whatever they're there for, I think they'll fit right in and have a blast.

Sorry for the lack of posts, I've been working feverishly on a redesign for The MidWasteland. We will be going "dot com" very shortly and I will be adding a few features.

Evilolive, usually full of suburban meatheads and eurotrash, was jam packed full of the city's hipster elite for the 'Booty Up' pre-Christmas bash.

Kids in stone washed denim, Cosby sweaters and intentionally mismatched outfits juked their hearts out ‘til 4 a.m. to music provided by Autobot, Zebo and MY!GAY!HUSBAND!

This was, by far, the best time I have ever had at Evilolive. I 'm sure if they keep booking good DJ’s this will be the spot. Which for me means, that after a night out dancing, I can pick up my 2 a.m. burrito from Pasadita and be home in my sweat suit in less than 10 minutes.

I like this dress, a lot, but I think she got lost and ended up at the wrong bar.

I know some of you out there will get on my ass because this woman isn't wearing big glasses or something neon but I really don't care.

I took her picture for a couple of reasons. One, I thought it was nice to see someone out on a Saturday morning getting their Starbucks in a classy, put-together outfit as opposed to stretch pants and friday night's makeup (i.e.- me) and two, I'm a total bag whore and I love that boxy, patent leather bag!

At Venus Magazine's Winter Issue release party, the season was in full effect all night. Fashion conscious Chicagoans pulled out their finest outerwear and cold-weather accessories to profess their personal-style efforts, despite the snowfall.

Boys-about-town were spotted winterizing their ensembles with 'grandpa cardigans', ties and my favorite, the winter beard.

The fellow above is the perfect example of what you'll see a Chicago guy sporting in the winter months.

This girl got the fur trend right with the oversized, faux fur collar on her vintage jacket. (I opted for a faux fur cape this season)

You hippies can hate fur all you want but you can’t deny the demureness it gives the woman wearing it. Obviously, I'm not going to run off to Adriana Fur to feel the warmth and luxury but I will go to H & M or a thrift store for a budget/animal friendly option and you should too!

The best way to stand out from the crowd in the pitch white of winter is by wearing outerwear with a pop of color. I love, love, love red in the winter and by winter I mean, all year long!

Also, if you’re really cold this winter, you can take a cue from the gal above and 'double-scarf'. Hey, we can do that here; it's the Midwest a.k.a the land of excess. (Now that I think about it maybe I should hook her up with the guy from the Eskell party with the 'double-sweater').

See, this goes to show that a little snow shouldn't stop you from looking good on those cold, winter nights!

So, last night, I went to a MyOpenBar event for the sole purpose of ~~taking pictures~~ getting drunk.

It ended up that the whiskey of the evening tasted like urine so I only had a sip of it (fine, I had a whole cup) and the interesting people I wanted to capture were few and far between.

Don't get me wrong, I still had a good time.

Though, I think the evening was geared more toward middle-aged men (or men in general) that likes his drink to taste "manly" and less toward the 'twenty-something' gal that only drinks things with 'tini' in the suffix...just a guess.

In my non-drunken stupor, I unknowingly (but soon found out) that I only took pictures of people that would take the stage that night. I think I fell in love with all three of them.

Jason Trachtenburg of The Trachtenburg Family is like Rick Moranis' weirdly hotter, younger (or older) brother.

Andrew Andrew MC'ed the event. They are two fellows, both with the name Andrew, that have been dressing alike for the last 10 years. I was tempted to ask Andrew to marry me but I think Andrew would have gotten pissed.

Eskell's opening party was so much fun. In case you missed it, here's the scene...

Great fall look: tweed blazer, big cat belt buckle & blue leather boots. The Catholic school girl in me loved the charm necklace accoutered with a St. Christopher medal and Italian horn...brings me back to my south side days.

Cute, that 's it. Just plain cute!

You know it's getting cold outside when you see someone wearing two sweaters, AT ONCE. This fella was channeling a total New England vibe with his cardigan and boat shoes, which I love. His mini ponytail was just icing on the cake.

I somehow got roped into going to a dance party in Boystown for part of my Halloween festivities.

Oh wait, I know how it happened.

I went to Sub T for a Flosstradamus show but got turned away, as did many other regulars to their events. Apparently, the barely legals and 30-something, yuppie guys in line, had beat us to the punch and pre-bought tickets online, which sold out the venue.

The change of plans took us across the city to Town Hall Pub, where I found Ronald and Fancy, amongst a sea of trannies and fighting lesbians.

This high heeled Ronald McDonald sprayed everyone in his path with red glitter, from his ketchup bottle, of course, and wore "cancer babies" on his fry holster.

When asked what her costume was she said, "Fancy". Duh, that totally makes sense. But seriously, the jacket she had on was vintage Saks Fifth Avenue and completely amazing.

Right after leaving the party, I found this nice "lady" walking the streets in a very unique costume. I had no clue that this is what a "Sexy Little Bride" looked like. I guess we all know now.

I had the honor of attending Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion show. Gen Art, is a non profit dedicated to promoting emerging artists, filmmakers and fashion designers. Fresh Faces is credited to launching designers Zac Posen, Rebecca Taylor and Chaiken. This year the line up included: Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, Apparatchik, Biasline by Soo Choi, Dieter Bennet, Moire Conroy, Nora Marcella, and Wrath Arcane.

I was so excited to go to this show because I hadn't been back since 2003. Back then I was a lowly intern that fetched Starbucks and answered phones and all I had to show for it was a load of free champaign and some makeup samples (okay, so it wasn't half bad!)

In the last 4 years the show has gone from a small theater to a tent(a-la-fashion week) in Millennium Park. I was blown away at how professional and elaborate the show has become.

Thanks to an old friend, who was nice enough to steal the 7LB issue of Elle (from a salon in L.A.) and send it to me, I found out that the similar sweater is by Moschino.

He ripped off his scarf, completely unprompted, to show me the tigers.
One of the many things that I don't need, yet incessantly collect, is scarves and this one would've fit nicely in my collection. Unfortunately, he was nice so I couldn't steal it from him.

Remember when you were a kid and you used to go to that one place "in the city" where you could get your dog collars, bowls, condoms, and non-mall clothes?

For Chicago, that used to be "Clark and Belmont" but as time goes on, whether we like it or not, Wicker Park has become that place. Back in the day, all the suburban kiddies would load into that ONE-friend-with-a-license's car and drive into the city to spend a day smoking cigarettes and stocking up on all the weird shit their parents didn't want them to have.

This youngin' loves a nice flat brim and a fresh pair of kicks.

If you go to a Flosstradamus show there's no need to expect the unexpected. From personal experience, I can forewarn you that almost every guy in the place will be wearing one of those ridiculous all over print sweatshirts(and the girls are probably in lame but that's a whole nother' post).

Last weekend I participated in "Thrifty Sunday", one of the many Ladyfest events around the city. For those of you that don't know, Ladyfest is a local group that promotes women involved in arts and activism.

Thrifty Sunday was a multi-vendor fair that gave gals from around the city the opportunity to sell their vintage clothes and kitschy housewares. A vegan sweet treat sale and fabulous raffle, bearing winnings like natural sanitary napkins, a vibrator and girlie porn were also part of the fem geared festivities.

I told myself that I was there to just to sell, but I couldn't resist the temptation to buy (what else is new).

I could lie and tell you that the best part of my wardrobe is the vintage, Courreges mock turtle neck (in mint condition!) that I purchased for two dollars or possibly my immense boot collection but instead, I'll be honest, REAL honest.

If you know me, you know that I'm a crazy cat lady. I love anything and everything cat related. On a trip to San Francisco, earlier this year, I found my ultimate favorite piece of clothing. Four words - MINT GREEN MUU MUU. Gasp, it's gets ~~worse~~ better. On the front is a graphic of kittens jumping out of a strawberry shaped teakettle with the phrase, "KIT-TEA CAT" above it. True story.

So, of course, the minute I saw Jeanie’s tiger tee I jumped for joy! This gal not only had a super awesome big cat T-shirt but her high waisted short shorts, cute cowboy boots and perfect mop of curls were marvelous as well.

Chicago's bike community has rapidly become one of the city's largest subcultures and with that comes a style that's hard to miss.

Bike style incorporates functionality into their fashion sense with things like colorful Chrome messenger bags, vintage t's or jerseys and cuffed pants. Flair is also a large part of bike style, which usually comes in the form of tattoo sleeves and facial piercings.

Although their sassy style goes unnoticed by fashionistas, it is a beacon for city drivers which may or may not be a good thing.

Seeing Zoë brought me back to the days of yore when I was a flannel-clad, blue haired preteen.

Back in 1994, I worshipped the ground Kurt Cobain (R.I.P) walked on, kept a scrapbook of Billie Joe’s magazine covers and made up dance routines to Offspring songs (I’m sorry, that one should have stayed a secret). My music reveries were only the half of my teen angst years.

The other half was consumed by the hours I spent ransacking thrift stores for unique and expressive clothing. Vintage baby tees, all things valour and oversized men’s pants (that I cinched with a flag football belt!) were a few of my favs. Um, wait I should mention that straighteners weren’t invented yet, I had braces and I thought it was okay to wear a shade of lipstick called, “Iced Mocha”.

Yea, I could go on forever but you get the idea. I was a gawky preteen who wasn’t afraid to take risks. I saw that in Zoë so I couldn’t help but take her picture.

I immediately knew this girl was young. Her presence emitted a youthful, sense of innocence. You know, it’s the same kind of innocence that let us leave the house in cinched 40’ waist pants or maybe, cut the “high top” off of our $200 Doc Marten’s (yep, I was insane).

Then I asked the ultimate question.
“So, what kind of music do you listen to?”
And to my satisfaction she answered, “Alternative”.

Yep, we've all been there.

Fall Back Forward! III. - GirlsGlamorama 2007

On to the main event...

On the runway at Glamorama 2007 were looks from Marc Jacobs, Just Cavalli, Donna Karan, Temperley London, Calvin Klein and Alberta Ferretti. The shapes, the accessories, AND the colors were impeccable. I can't wait to get the knock offs at Forever 21.

I think I was so impressed with these looks due to the late 80's/early 90's influence I saw in every collection. Those were the ~~weirdest~~ most memorable years in my wardrobe's history.

Sometimes, I look in the mirror and I wonder why my outfit feels so familiar. Maybe it's because I already wore it in 1989. Man, I was one hip seven year old!

I know that MOST of The MidWasteland readers are women so if you aren't a man OR you just don't care about men's fashion, sit back and enjoy the eye candy. My pictures do these models no justice; they were so much hotter in person.

This fall, men's fashion is ALL about the accessories. Hmm, sounds familiar! We will see everything from hats (yep, they're still here) to red leather jackets a la Michael Jackson.

In Chicago, it's rare that we that we have noteworthy fashion events but last week I had the opportunity to attend Glamorama, one of the few in that category. Glamorama is Macy's fall fashion preview/charity event that is not only noteworthy but NYC worthy as well. This year's show had a Wild West meets haute couture theme suitably named, "The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful".

I wasn't sure what would be in store for me when I was invited to attend the mid day dress rehearsal but on arrival I was pleasantly surprised. Streaming pictures of cowgirls on the big screen, a countdown to the show and upbeat club jams let me know that I was in for something spectacular.

As 20-something fashionistas the only things on our minds are the September issue of Vogue, what colors are in for fall and how we're going to afford our credit card bill after that new pair of Louboutons.

As time goes on, those things become less important and we begin to care more about fashionable strollers instead of shoes and Botox instead of bare minerals...or do we?

Today I spotted two geriatric fashion plates that made me hope I still value my personal style in 50 years as much as I do today.

First of all, she had crimped hair and second of all she had a (fake) diamond studded, Chanel choker on - I love that idea.

Honestly, I know this lady is off her rocker but in person she is a total show stopper.
Her hair was cut to perfection and straight out of the 20's.
I fucking LOVE pearls so I thought her choker was awesome.
I know, I know, her sweater coat is a little wild but I think it fit her personality.

Obviously, I meet a lot of people on the street, some rude and some nice. Most of the time, people wonder why I'd even want to take their picture but these two women had no qualms. They started to pose the minute I came up to them. To me, THAT IS STYLE.

Let me start by admitting that I have ADD.
In any given conversation, my eyes and mind never stop wondering to the next best thing.
So, with that in mind, I was in mid conversation, doing my ADD driven environment scan, when I saw a guy walking toward my friend and I.

In the matter of seconds I thought to myself, "Is that Gideon Yago? No, it can't be. Where is he any way? That guy is definitely not from around here."

I rudely interrupted my friend to yell, "Hey! You! Yea, YOU!”

The guy stops and I ask to take his picture. When he agreed, my second question was, "Where are you from?" He bashfully answered, "Melbourne".

Just as I suspected, he’s foreign. The good ones usually are.

This past weekend, August 3rd through 5th, was the 3rd annual Lollapalooza music festival held in Chicago, IL.
Acts ranged from alternative legends, Pearl Jam and Silverchair to indie dance dilettantes, The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem. Hometown heroes Flosstradamus, The Cool Kids, Wax On Radio and DJ Matt Roan were also on the roster representing the Chi.

When the artists weren't playing or rocking out to their favorite bands they were relaxing in the CK IN2U Music Lounge at The Hard Rock Hotel. The Lounge was a "VIP + Artist retreat" that offered guests food & drink, a place to unwind and room full of SCHWAG!

The CK IN2U his and hers fragrances smell AMAZING.
Unfortunately, they received more buzz for their marketing than their scents.
The bottles were inspired by iPODS and targeted toward the 20 something "technosexual generation".

The Calvin Klein "Naked" collection-

Say goodbye to your Hanky Pankys and cheap ass 'Forever 21' underwear.
The super nice gals at the CK booth gave me 3 pairs of the nearly seamless panties and guaranteed satisfaction.
I didn't believe them at first but I was totally converted when I wore them under a dress that same night and sure enough, NO PANTY LINES.

PF Flyers Shoes-

PF Flyers aren't just for boys anymore. Yayyy!
The brand, best known for their men's high tops, has decided to include the addition of a ladies division.
Women will have a wide array of comfortable flats and stylish athletic shoes to choose from.
I was given a pair of the 'Lo Fi' in red chenille tweed.
Sooo cute! Kinda makes me wish it was fall already.

KY "Intrigue"

KY came to the event armed with chocolate covered strawberries and 'pleasure packs' for all.
The 'pleasure pack' included two(2) scented candles and a nice big bottle of lube.
Honestly, it was one stop NOBODY missed.

Skullcandy Headphones

As much as I love music and of course, fashion, I still haven't bought into the whole "fashion forward" ipod case/headphone/accessory thing.
Skullcandy, the brand on the forefront of that market, is working hard to turn people like me to the dark side.
I spotted a pair of sleek, black and gold headphones that any fashionista would love but I'm still not entirely convinced.

1 year supply of Cafe Bustelo coffee

All my life I have seen my Abuelita drink Cafe Bustelo like it was going out of style.
She was onto something special.
This coffee is THE BEST, I was hooked after one can .
"Bustelo Cool" + Vodka = Highly recommended.
I think Abuelita would be proud.

Custom Airbrushing

The very talented airbrush artist, T-Zar worked his magic on
hundreds of CK IN2U t shirts. He did pictures of bunnies, bubble letters,
hearts and the like. When my turn came, T-Zar made an exception for my lil' draws...Aren't they cute!

Tattoos

Last but certainly not least was the on site tattoo station.
People could get anything their hearts desired, thanks to Tony and Cody.
I think the best tattoo I witnessed a guy getting was the word, "Tramp Stamp", on his lower back.

This weekend I took a break from my stagnant Mid Western lifestyle to wade through a sea of fake breasts, spiked hair and turquoise jewelery in Phoenix, AZ....

Amongst the rubble I found a hipster paradise tucked away in the shopping district of Old Town Scottsdale.

I happened to stumble upon a Mexican trading post with a ton of items under $19.99 that any good hipster would love to have/already has in their wardrobe.
